Along the Creek

I just wanted to paint a little water. It's been so dry here that it's scary. The fun of this one was to capture that lush growth, the sparkling light, and the highlight of the stream. Refreshing to paint. (And it rained here last night--finally!)

Sidelit Sunflower

Okay, the title is lame, but I like the painting. How can you miss with purple and orange? Well, at least for me. Favorite little bit: where the light *blings* on the petal at the middle left. Ya gotta love the small stuff, you know?

Glorious Gold

The cottonwoods aren't quite this yellow here yet, but somehow the promise of gold is on its way even though it's still hitting the 90s in the daytime. I found a photo that was shared in a challenge last year in the WetCanvas Landscape forum and reinterpreted it. It really is this brilliant, and I love the swing-and-sway of the composition.

Fall Reds

I have some wonderful purple that just seemed to turn on the reds of these trees. I was fascinated by the glow they had. We don't get such reds around here, so you can guess that this was painted from a photo taken by a WetCanvas acquaintance, Hal Kirby--with thanks--of Great Salt Marsh NP in NH. It's my version, of course. I'm totally jazzed by the colors!

Last Rays

Been awhile, but I'm still around and painting.

This one is on Pastelmat. It's about how my backyard looks in the fall, although the grass is mythical. I love the contrast of the cottonwood and plum tree.

Fall Sisters

A couple of miles up behind my house is a volcanic outcrop where there are a lot of ancient petroglyphs, and beyond that is this lineup of extinct volcanoes we call the Three Sisters. I love seeing the fall grasses on the high mesa dancing in the cool wind. The black volcanic rock pops up out of the sea of grass, sometimes  looking like the buried backbone of a giant mythical creature asleep there.

It's on Arches 300-lb. cold press, which gives it just the right texture to express the miles of grass on the plains.

Last of October

There's a maple tree in my backyard. We don't have too many maples around this area and because of the temperatures this one never shows the gorgeous colors that maples are famous for, but the shape of the leaves are lovely anyway. This one is on buttercup yellow Pastelmat. I painted the pale yellow over that ground, but it definitely flavored the colors in the painting.
