Summer Desert

A friend shared this photo with me (thanks Geraldine!) I reinterpreted it a bit. I love the here-and-there subject matter, the soft cloud and sharp cactus reaching out in opposition to one another. It's so typical of New Mexico in July: hot and dry, with the promise of cool rain to come.

Summer Corner

I have a whole series of little wild garden spots like this one. I especially enjoy the way the flowers disappear into the distance, dancing up the hillside.

Along the Creek

I just wanted to paint a little water. It's been so dry here that it's scary. The fun of this one was to capture that lush growth, the sparkling light, and the highlight of the stream. Refreshing to paint. (And it rained here last night--finally!)

Froth

The colors of rocks intrigues me, especially comparing the dry ones to those submerged. I like the suggestion of rocks beneath the frothing foam in this one. The canvas texture makes it look like a miniature oil painting.

Tangle

I love a wild, tangled garden. There can be such relaxed beauty there, as the light filters through the mess of flowers and leaves. (There's a metaphor for my life there, I think!) At any rate, the light in this one pleases me, as does the palette of colors.

All in a Row

I loved capturing the delicate leaves highlighted by the sun on this grove. The canvas texture works perfectly for that. Don't you think the smallest tree looks like a wayward child, twirling as all of her relatives look on? (Okay, sometimes my imagination goes off, but trees always seem like people to me. Maybe it's early Ent exposure, a la Tolkien!)

Cactus Trail

I like the odd rhythms of cactus, especially when they're dancing on a gentle slope like this one. I had fun with the light and shadow, too, as well as the hard and soft edges.
